Introduction
The recent internationalization of higher education has identified a notable shift in international student mobility towards China, driven by its rapid economic growth and development in higher education (Xu & Montgomery, 2019). With a more diverse student population, intercultural contacts, as well as conflicts, occur more often between opposing parties due to differences within and beyond the educational environment. Such problems serve as epitomes of the more severe and intense conflicts around the world. To further investigate this phenomenon, my research utilizes Chinese universities as a case study to explore the role of educational institutions in developing intercultural competencies and reconciliation competencies as a means of building trust and promoting peace and reconciliation among divided communities. The research also analyzes existing conflict resolution and management practices to discuss challenges faced by institutions and organizations in China. Higher education institutions need to be supported and enabled to promote the informed and peaceful confrontation of ideas to facilitate intercultural dialogue among diverse groups on campuses and in broader communities. This ultimately points toward the cultivation of intercultural competence, conflict competence, and reconciliation competence. In addition, as an educator, I am committed to creating engaging and inclusive learning environments in my classroom. As a researcher, I will try my best to serve the same purpose in a more structured and analytical manner. Thus, I also aim to use this research as an opportunity to propose possible ways for higher education institutions to facilitate intercultural teaching and learning effectively.
