NHK High School Course World History Inquiry: “Modern History of East Asia”, by Toyomi ASANO

Toyomi ASANO

Faculty of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University Professor

Professor Toyomi Asano, Director of our institute, served as both an academic supervisor and lecturer for Episode 30 of NHK’s educational program World History Inquiry, titled “The Cold War and the Modern World.”

Overview

This episode examines the formation of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II, the independence of Asian countries from colonial rule, and the historical processes that led to national divisions and regional conflicts.

As nationalism grew across Asia, countries sought independence from former colonial powers, including Western nations and Japan. At the same time, the ideological struggle between capitalism and socialism became increasingly intense. These two forces were closely connected, turning Asia into a major battleground of the Cold War, where tensions often developed into actual armed conflicts.

The episode explores regional conflicts, including the Korean War, the division of nations, and the political instability that followed. It also examines the political and social challenges people faced, as well as the strong emotions that shaped these events, such as distrust and fear between opposing blocs, and tensions and conflicts within nations and communities.

Furthermore, the episode considers how inequalities and historical grievances developed during the formation of the postwar international order. Understanding these historical processes is essential for examining the roots of the divisions, territorial disputes, and historical issues that continue to affect East Asia today. By exploring the causes of past tragedies, the lecture encourages us to consider how we can build a foundation for future dialogue and reconciliation.
