【Event Information】Navigating Memory in Berlin: Between International Relations and Local Politics

Dr. Babis, Director of the Civic Education unit at the Democratic Resilience Center at Helmut Schmidt University, has arrived in Japan. Dr. Babis received his Ph.D. from the Center for Reconciliation Studies at the University of Jena in Germany and will be conducting a research stay in Japan for about two months. Specializing in international security policy and conflict studies, he also conducts research from the perspective of “memory.”

On June 29, a research seminar featuring Dr. Babis as a speaker will be held, hosted by the Gender & Ethnicity Group. Furthermore, on August 1, he is scheduled to give a lecture on the decolonization of the Ottoman Empire and the emergence of the Greek nation, hosted by the Global History Group. We warmly encourage your participation.

Dr. Charalampos (Babis) Karpouchtsis, born in Thessaloniki (Greece), studied Political Science at Freie Universität Berlin and earned his M.A. in European Politics from the University of Bath (UK). In 2023, he completed his PhD at the Jena Center for Reconciliation Studies, Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Since 2022, he works at the Department of Political Science at Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg. He is the director of the Civic Education unit at the Democratic Resilience Center and teaches in the field of International Security Policy and Conflict Research. His dissertation, Old Wounds, New Foreign Policy? Germany and Greek Martyr Communities: Between Recognition and Reconciliation, was published by Springer. In 2024, he received the Fritz and Helga Exner Foundation Dissertation Award from the Southeast Europe Association Germany.
