Proposed research

Global citizenship and collective memory in international education: A case study of Japan-US reconciliation

Cross-border educational initiatives such as study abroad have long claimed to transform the hearts and minds of its participants, most recently through the framework of global citizenship. Global citizenship aspires to cultivate a sense of belonging to a common humanity based on universal values, challenging dominant national citizenship discourses. While national citizenship has been employed to shape collective memory of past events, global citizenship has the potential to complicate national understandings of the past. This research adopts Japan-US reconciliation as a case study to examine how international education initiatives between the US and Japan have shaped participants’ collective memory of World War II using the framework of global citizenship. The research will survey Japanese-American and Japanese participants to interrogate the roles of national and global citizenship in the formation of collective memory.

Research aims

I aim to become a researcher who can offer new ideas and perspectives on the role education should play in society, endeavoring toward building a world that works for all.
