Career goal

to become a critical educational researcher, applying my research to improve education for future generations in Vietnam.

Research Theme

My research focuses on the impact of study abroad experiences on students and society. There has been much research on the benefits of study abroad on students’ academic, personal, and professional development. However, I also think that there are broader impacts of this unique study experience, such as mutual understanding, regional and global cooperation, and peace. My focus is on examining the emergence of post-national identities among international students. Using the concept of the “imagined community”, I investigate how these experiences shape students’ perspectives on broader communities beyond national borders, such as regional and global communities. In my research, I theorized that identities are imagined, constructed, and tied to community, and study abroad acts as a transformative mechanism for students to build connections with wider communities, align themselves to broader membership and reorient their sense of belonging to communities that transcend national borders. My research aims to explore how study abroad experiences in Japan influence ASEAN students’ attitudes and perspectives on Japan’s colonial history in Southeast Asia and past conflicts within ASEAN’s member states. I argue that embracing post-national identity would neglect the rise of aggressive nationalism, promote universal values, mutual understanding, trust, and cooperation for a common future.
